How Much Does a Social Media Manager Cost for a Small Business?

How much does a social media manager cost? Real numbers for freelancers, in-house hires and agencies, plus DIY tools and AI that creates and posts for you.

A social media manager for a small business can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars a month for a part-time freelancer to more than $65,000 a year for a full-time hire. Agencies usually sit in between, often around $2,000 a month for a few networks. The right option depends less on the price tag and more on what you actually need done: strategy, content creation, posting, or replying to customers.

What a social media manager actually does

Before comparing prices, it helps to know what you are paying for. A typical social media manager handles some mix of:

  • Planning what to post and when
  • Writing captions and designing images or short videos
  • Scheduling and publishing on each network
  • Answering comments and messages
  • Running or supporting paid ads
  • Reporting on what worked

Not every small business needs all of this, so know your must-haves before you pay for extras.

Option 1: Hire a freelancer

Freelancers are the most common first step. You pay by the hour or with a monthly package.

Upwork lists social media managers at $14 to $35 an hour. If you booked someone for about 10 hours a week (roughly 43 hours a month), that range works out to about $600 to $1,500 a month, by simple math.

More experienced freelancers charge more. In a 2024 pricing survey by HeyOrca of more than 100 agency and freelance social media managers, freelancers with 7 or more years of experience averaged $92.23 an hour.

Good for: owners who want a real person with flexible hours. Watch out for: availability. When your freelancer is sick, busy with a bigger client or moves on, your posting stops.

Option 2: Hire someone in-house

A full-time employee gives you the most control and the most time.

Indeed reports an average base salary of $65,744 a year for social media managers in the United States, based on job postings (updated October 2026). For a wider view, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for market research analysts and marketing specialists at $78,760 a year as of May 2025.

Remember that salary is only part of the cost. You also pay payroll taxes, benefits, paid time off, tools and the time it takes you to hire and train.

Good for: businesses with enough volume to keep one person busy every day. Watch out for: paying full-time for a part-time need.

Option 3: Hire an agency

Agencies bring a team: a strategist, a designer, a copywriter and an account manager. They usually charge a monthly retainer.

In the same HeyOrca survey, the average monthly retainer to manage LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook for one client was $2,107.14. That scope included three client-approved posts per platform each week and 5 to 10 hours of community management.

Good for: businesses that want strategy and a full team without hiring. Watch out for: long contracts, slow approval loops and setup fees. Ask exactly how many posts, which networks and how many revisions are included.

Option 4: Do it yourself with tools

Many owners start here. You use a design tool like Canva, a scheduler like Buffer or Hootsuite, and maybe ChatGPT for captions. The subscriptions are usually affordable.

The hidden cost is your time. You still have to come up with the idea, make the post, write the caption and schedule it. On a busy week, that is the first thing to slip. We compared this setup in Hudo vs ChatGPT and Canva.

Good for: owners who enjoy making content and have a few hours every week. Watch out for: the blank page. Tools speed up the work but do not do it for you.

Option 5: AI that creates and posts for you

A newer category of tools learns your business and then creates the posts, images and videos for you, and publishes them. Your job is to review and approve.

Good for: owners who want steady, on-brand content without hiring. Watch out for: tools that do not learn your business first, because the content will sound generic. Also check that nothing posts without your approval.

How to choose

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Do I need a strategist or a steady flow of posts? If you need strategy and ads management, an agency or experienced freelancer makes sense. If you mainly need consistent posts, a person may be more than you need.
  2. How much of my own time can I give? DIY is cheap in dollars and expensive in hours.
  3. Who answers customers? Replies to comments and DMs still need a human. Whoever you pick, decide who owns that.

Many small businesses combine options: an AI tool for daily content plus a freelancer a few hours a month for ads or a photo shoot.

How Hudo does this in 3 steps

Hudo gives you the daily content part of a social media manager for a fraction of the cost. No prompts, and nothing posts without your approval.

1. Connect your business

Paste your website and connect your social accounts with their official login (we never ask for your passwords). Hudo builds a Brain of your business: your offer, your customer, your brand kit, your voice and your seasons.

2. Approve with one tap

Every day, new ads, posts and short videos land ready. Keep what you like, skip what you don't, and pick the variation you prefer.

3. It posts and gets smarter

Hudo schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn and Threads. It reads the results, makes more of what works, and your Brain gets a new version every week. Autopilot is earned: you can switch it on only after approving 90% of what Hudo makes over 20 decisions, and one tap pauses everything. See the full flow in how it works.

On cost: the Annual plan is $462 a year (about $38.50 a month). Quarterly is $55 the first month, then $150 every 3 months. Each paid month includes $15 of AI credit, an estimated 15 images or 7 videos at Recommended quality. Every plan includes unlimited businesses and agency mode.
